Mosquito Repellency
Harnessing the power of nature to protect people and spaces – safely, effectively, and without harmful chemicals.
At Vapour Science, we are pioneering a new era of mosquito repellency through our precision vapour diffusion system and naturally derived actives. In a proof-of-concept trial conducted by the Dr Edward Koch Foundation, our hydrogenated catmint oil (HCO) formulation demonstrated rapid and consistent repellency against Aedes aegypti – the mosquito responsible for spreading dengue, Zika, and other serious diseases.
Proven in Real-World Conditions
The study involved releasing female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes into a closed environment and measuring human landing rates before and after the vapour was activated. Within just five minutes of activation, our HCO vapour reduced landing rates by over 75%. After 60 minutes, repellency reached up to 99%.
Importantly, the mosquitoes were not killed. Instead, their biting behaviour was disrupted. They ceased host-seeking, harboured in the dark quiet zones of the room and avoided landing on exposed skin. This confirms the spatial repellency effect of our formulation—protecting without relying on toxic knockdown sprays.
Outperforms Industry Standards
When compared to PMD (oil of lemon eucalyptus), a widely used natural repellent, our HCO vapour consistently delivered far stronger and faster results. Unlike conventional repellents that require direct skin contact, our vapour-based method provides full-room coverage, creating a protective environment without topical application.
Safe, Clean, and Sustainable
Our mosquito repellent system uses:
A low concentration of hydrogenated catmint oil
A mild, plant-based, polysorbate surfactant.
Ultrasonic diffusion for even and continuous dispersion.
There is no combustion, no smoke, and no synthetic chemicals required in this process.
Next Steps
These results highlight a compelling commercial opportunity to rethink mosquito control in domestic, hospitality, and health care environments.
